SJ21: Celebrating the life of Dr. Lorenzo Pharr Archer.
WHEREAS, Dr. Lorenzo Pharr Archer of Virginia Beach, a respected citizen and outstanding longtime physician, died on July 29, 2007; and
WHEREAS, Lorenzo “Rint” Archer was born in Norfolk on November 25, 1940, the third son of four children born to the late James Peter and Osceola Pharr Archer; he was educated in Norfolk Public Schools, graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in June 1958 as class president, and received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Lincoln University in 1962; and
WHEREAS, a gifted and compassionate physician, Lorenzo Archer received his medical degree from Meharry Medical School in 1966 and maintained a private practice in orthopedic surgery in Norfolk for 26 years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Archer gave his time and immense talents to numerous civic organizations over the years, including as a volunteer for the Senior Net Center, where he taught an introductory computer course; as team doctor for Norfolk State University's athletic department; as assistant director of the Helping Hands Adult Day Care Center at Norfolk Community Hospital; as chair of the Patient and Family Services Committee of the Alzheimer’s Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter; and as a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Archer was a faithful member of historic First Baptist Church on Bute Street in Norfolk and an active participant in the tutorial ministry, emergency medical and health ministry, READY Academy Christian School, Shepherds Village at Park Avenue, and the church’s many other missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Archer loved athletics and was an avid tennis player and swimmer, and over the years, he taught both of these sports as a volunteer to young people and adults; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Archer will be fondly remembered for his commitment to providing quality medical care and his devotion to his family; and he will be greatly missed by his faithful wife, Diana; his devoted children, Lorenzo Pharr Archer II and Alexis Bacote Archer from his previous marriage to Sylvia Bacote; his numerous other loving family members and friends; and his countless patients, colleagues, and admirers in Hampton Roads; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine physician and outstanding Virginian, Dr. Lorenzo Pharr Archer; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Lorenzo Pharr Archer as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
