WHEREAS, the triumphant 2007 Westfield High School football team capped a perfect season by winning the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group AAA, Division 6, state football championship on Saturday, December 8, 2007, at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville; and

WHEREAS, the Westfield High School Bulldogs defeated the Woodbridge High School Vikings by a score of 42–14 to complete what is believed to be the first 15–0 season in VHSL football history; and

WHEREAS, the two tough football teams traded touchdowns early in the third quarter and were tied at 14 before the outstanding Bulldogs scored four unanswered touchdowns to clinch the state title; and

WHEREAS, Westfield High School senior running backs Brian Kennedy and Steve Tabot each scored on short passes; senior linebacker Kyle Gofredo intercepted a Vikings’ pass, sprinting 22 yards for a touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter; and sophomore running back Dylan Doty added an insurance score on a 13-yard run with only a minute left to play in the game; and

WHEREAS, the Bulldogs’ quarterback Mike Glennon, who will continue his football career at North Carolina State, and his efficient offense had an outstanding game, rushing 35 times for 190 yards and completing 14 of 23 passes for 152 yards; and

WHEREAS, the hardworking Bulldogs scored six touchdowns by six different players in a great team effort, gave up no turnovers, and forced three turnovers by Vikings to win their second state title in five years; and

WHEREAS, the exemplary performance of the 2007 Bulldogs is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Tom Verbanic and his staff; and the support of the students and faculty of Westfield High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Bulldogs from Westfield High School on their outstanding 2007 season and Group AAA, Division 6, state title; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Tom Verbanic on behalf of the Bulldog team as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the 2007 Westfield High School football team.
