WHEREAS, Elbert E. Stone of Martinsville, a respected former city councilman and outstanding community advocate, died on April 28, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Elbert E. “Tee” Stone was born in Gary, West Virginia, on September 19, 1920, to the late Albert and Nettie Grace Davis Stone and grew up and went to school in Martinsville, before joining the United States Army Air Corps; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant E. E. Stone was a bombardier aboard the B-17s of the 303rd Bombardment Group (Heavy) based in Molesworth, England, and he completed 25 combat missions over Europe during World War II; he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and became an instructor training new aviators; and

WHEREAS, after the war, E. E. Stone returned home to Martinsville and became the owner and operator of Johnson’s Radiator Works; and

WHEREAS, E. E. Stone served as chairman of the local Selective Service Board and was a member of the Martinsville City Planning Commission; and

WHEREAS, in 1956, E. E. Stone was elected to the Martinsville City Council and served until 1966, many of those years as vice mayor; and

WHEREAS, always ready to help his fellow citizens in need, E. E. Stone was active in several civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club; and

WHEREAS, a great mentor of young people, E. E. Stone volunteered as a coach for Pony League Baseball teams and served as president of the Joseph Martin Elementary School Parent Teacher Association; and

WHEREAS, E. E. Stone will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by Christine, his devoted wife of 65 years; his son Jody and daughter Teresa and their wonderful families, including five grandsons, a granddaughter, and three great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine community leader and outstanding Virginian, Elbert E. Stone; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elbert E. Stone as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
