Description

Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Program. Provides that scholarships awarded through the Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Program may be used to cover the costs of required academic fees, in addition to tuition and textbooks already provided by state law, and graduate study at the masters and doctoral levels, as determined by the Awards Committee. This bill also clarifies the Awards Committee's authority to establish policies, standards, and rules to govern the Program, thereby strengthening its accountability for and authority to administer and oversee the Program. This bill is a recommendation of the Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Awards Committee. Amends § 30-231.01 (“Definitions.”), § 30-231.1 (“Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Program created; purpose.”), § 30-231.2 (“Criteria for awarding and renewal of scholarships; awards made by the Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Committee; eligible students; Standards of Learning requirements and assessments waived for eligible students.”), § 30-231.3 (“Amount of scholarships; use of scholarships; disbursement and recovery of scholarship funds; terms and conditions; penalty.”), § 30-231.8 (“Powers and duties of the Committee.”), of the Code of Virginia.
