Description

Elections; photo identification required to vote. Specifies that a voter must present a photo identification document issued by Virginia or the United States to vote and eliminates other alternatives now provided under Virginia law. This bill is patterned after the Indiana statute that is the subject of pending cases before the United States Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the requirement. Amends § 24.2-643 (“Qualified voter permitted to vote; procedures at polling place; voter identification.”), § 24.2-701 (“Application for absentee ballot.”), § 24.2-706 (“Duty of general registrar and electoral board on receipt of application; statement of voter.”), of the Code of Virginia.
