Commending the Honorable John W. Knapp, Sr.

WHEREAS, the Honorable John W. Knapp, Sr., is commended for his service to the City of Lexington and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), John Knapp served in the United States Army and in private industry before returning to VMI to serve on the faculty; and

WHEREAS, an excellent leader and administrator, John Knapp served with great distinction as the superintendent of VMI for six years; and

WHEREAS, actively involved in the community, John Knapp served on the Lexington City Council before becoming mayor of the small but vibrant City of Lexington in 2000; and

WHEREAS, John Knapp brought his strong leadership skills and work ethic to the mayoral office, where he worked diligently to run the city government effectively to meet the residents’ needs; and

WHEREAS, John Knapp has given generously of his time and talents as an executive committee member of the Virginia Municipal League and city representative and chair of the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission; and

WHEREAS, John Knapp currently serves as vice chair of the Virginia National Defense Industrial Authority and as a military aide to Governor Timothy Kaine; he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in the Virginia Militia in April 2008; and

WHEREAS, John Knapp has devoted his life to serving his country and community and is a model for others to emulate; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Honorable John W. Knapp, Sr., for his service to the City of Lexington and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable John W. Knapp, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his lifetime of public service.
