Where does Steve Landes & the other repubs think VDOT will find the funds to open the rest areas and residency offices, when there was no money to keep any of the nearly 1000 employees who lost their jobs due to budget shortfall? Further, federal law prohibits privatizing state rest areas. In addition, NO ONE WANTS TO STOP AT ANY REST AREA MAINTAINED BY INMATES--just an emergency waiting to happen.
Rest stops are nice, extras not essentials, where is the money coming from to open them? Truck stops and establishments off of the highways have received an increase in business since the rest stops closed. If the state wants to sell them to private companies, do so, don't pass a bill mandating they stay open! when we have the funds open them.
