WHEREAS, Marcus Pinson Neal, Jr., of Richmond, a noted physician, administrator, and educator, died on December 23, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Marcus Neal was born April 22, 1927, and prior to his studies and career, he proudly served in the United States Naval Hospital Corps from June of 1945 to January of 1947; and
WHEREAS, a hard-working scholar, Marcus Neal received a bachelor?s degree in medicine from the University of Missouri in 1951 and earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee; he spent a year of internship at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and completed his residency in radiology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Neal began his teaching career at the University of Wisconsin before his long association with the Medical College of Virginia (now known as the VCU School of Medicine); and
WHEREAS, Dr. Neal served in many capacities and numerous positions at MCV/VCU until his retirement in 1998, including Director of Postgraduate Education in the Department of Radiology, Chairman of the Division of Diagnostic Radiology, Director of the Regional Medical Program, Assistant Dean of the Medical College, Director of Continuing Education, Director of Graduate Medical Education, Interim Dean of the School of Medicine, Vice President for Health Sciences, and Provost for the Health Sciences Campus - Virginia Commonwealth University; and
WHEREAS, while provost, Dr. Neal was a guiding force in merging the Medical College of Virginia and Richmond Professional Institute into a single school, Virginia Commonwealth University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Neal held positions in many medical and community associations and organizations, including president of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Radiology and the Southern Medical Association, chairman of the Richmond Academy of Medicine and the Virginia Board of Forestry, vice president of the board of directors for Commonwealth Bank (now known as First Community Bank), and member of the board of directors of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Neal received many honors and awards for his extensive accomplishments, including the Southern Medical Association Distinguished Service Award, the MCV/VCU Distinguished Service Award, and the Citation of Merit from the University of Missouri; and
WHEREAS, the M. Pinson Neal, Jr., M.D. Outstanding Resident Award was established in recognition of his years of exemplary service as Director of Graduate Medical Education in the Department of Radiology at MCV/VCU and the Richmond Radiological Society annually conducts the ?M. Pinson Neal Jr., M.D. Lecture? in recognition of his many years of outstanding contributions to the Society; and
WHEREAS, upon his retirement from MCV/VCU, Dr. Neal was appointed Professor Emeritus in the Department of Radiology at the VCU School of Medicine and on May 16, 2003, the VCU School of Medicine honored him with the dedication of the Neal Lecture Hall; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Dr. Neal will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 48 years, Gail Fallon Neal; daughters, Sandra Neal Dawson and Ruth-Catherine ?Boo? Neal Perkins and their families; son, Marcus Pinson Neal III and his family; and numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a wise and dedicated physician, educator, and administrator, Marcus Pinson Neal, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marcus Pinson Neal, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
