WHEREAS, founded in 1985, Highlands Union Bank of Southwest Virginia celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2010; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank serves customers through its main office in Abingdon and 14 offices in Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, and Western North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank is a trendsetter among community banks, especially in the area of technology; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank has experienced above average growth over the past 25 years; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank?s assets jumped from $2 million to $9.2 million in the first year of operation and now, in its 25th year, its assets are valued at more than $625 million; and

WHEREAS, having started out in 1985 with a staff of eight employees, Highlands Union Bank currently provides a professional career for more than 250 individuals; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank was twice voted Best Bank in Bristol by readers of the Bristol Herald Courier; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank was named ?Business of the Year? by the Business Journal?s Greater Tri-Cities Business Awards; and

WHEREAS, Independent Banker magazine featured a cover story on Highlands Union Bank, focusing on the bank?s remarkable growth as a result of sterling service, teamwork, and a unique emphasis on the personal touch; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank has been recognized by the Small Business Administration and Working Woman magazine as one of Virginia?s top banks for lending; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank is a committed corporate citizen in every community it serves; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank sets the standard for excellence in customer service and consistently operates with honesty, integrity, and sound judgment; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank is among the 8,246 independent community banks across the United States that remain stable and poised to play a key role in the nation?s economic recovery; and

WHEREAS, Highlands Union Bank symbolizes the best in community banking; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Highlands Union Bank on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Highlands Union Bank as an expression of the General Assembly?s congratulations for 25 years of community banking service to Southwest Virginia.
