WHEREAS, the Salem Choral Society, conductor and composer Aaron Garber, and librettist Richard Bansemer are recognized in 2010 for their many contributions to music education, entertainment, and the arts and culture of the community of Salem; and
WHEREAS, on March 6, 2010, the Salem Choral Society (SCS) will premier its third oratorio, Jesus, Son of Our Father, at the Shaftman Performance Hall at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, Jesus, Son of Our Father is the latest collaborative work of Aaron Garber and Richard Bansemer; and
WHEREAS, scored for full orchestra, chorus, and soloists, Jesus, Son of Our Father is presented by the SCS, directed by Aaron Garber; the Salem High School Chorale, directed by Kristi Vernon; and soloists Dan Snyder, Tenor, and the Reverend Philip Bouknight, Baritone; and
WHEREAS, the oratorio?s full title is ?Jesus, Son of Our Father according to the Gospel of John? and it features 18 pieces, opening with the creation story of John 1 and concluding with the portrayal of the final recorded meeting between Jesus and Peter in John 21; and
WHEREAS, the Salem Choral Society was founded in 2001 by Aaron Garber and the group's first rehearsal was held on September 11, 2001, a day of great loss but also a day when ?music and singing uplifted the spirits of those at our first practice?; and
WHEREAS, the Salem Choral Society, a regional chorus comprised of singers from 10 cities and counties throughout the area, performs a diverse range of music from classical to pops; and
WHEREAS, Aaron Garber, Composer, and Richard Bansemer, Librettist, have collaborated on two other oratorios, Job, the Oratorio in 2004 and Mary, the Mother of Jesus in 2006; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his position with SCS, Aaron Garber is the director of music at College Lutheran Church in Salem and the Jefferson Choral Society; and
WHEREAS, Aaron Garber is a talented organist, pianist, tenor soloist, and he plays the French horn; and
WHEREAS, Richard Bansemer has served as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) since 1966 and as Bishop of the Virginia Synod, ELCA, from 1987 until retiring in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Richard Bansemer is an accomplished author of 11 spiritual books, and he leads occasional retreats on spirituality for clergy and laity; and
WHEREAS, the SCS motto is "Enriching lives through music performance, outreach, and education," and the Salem Choral Society has more than delivered on its creed by providing quality, innovative, exciting, and deeply moving performances for residents of and visitors to Salem and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Salem Choral Society, Aaron Garber, and Richard Bansemer for their outstanding achievements, especially the greatly anticipated premiere of Jesus, Son of Our Father, as well as for their many contributions to the community of Salem; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Salem Choral Society as an expression of the General Assembly?s gratitude for the organization?s commitment to the arts and culture of the Commonwealth.
