WHEREAS, Philip LeeAllen Minor, a beloved and admired obstetrician from Richmond, died on January 18, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Philip Minor was born on Valentine?s Day, the son of Marylyn Upshaw and Philip Henry, and at the age of 15, graduated from John Marshall High School, where he was a member of the 1940 undefeated and unscored-upon football team; and
WHEREAS, an outstanding athlete and hard-working student, Philip Minor attended the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia and was a member of the Spider and Cavalier football teams; and
WHEREAS, Philip Minor married the love of his life, Margaret Thomas, and together they raised a wonderful family of five children, including Chuck, Lynn, Steve, and the late Martha and late Philip; and
WHEREAS, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Philip Minor sought to enlist in the United States Navy and the recruiting officer enrolled him in the U.S. Navy?s V-12 program; and
WHEREAS, through this program, Philip Minor became one of the youngest graduates of the Medical College of Virginia in 1947; released from his service commitment due to the end of World War II, he later volunteered to serve as a ship?s doctor during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, after his discharge from active duty, Dr. Minor served patients as an obstetrician and gynecologist in Richmond from 1953 until his retirement in 1997, and in his oft-repeated words, ?thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of it?; and
WHEREAS, during a long and successful career, Dr. Minor delivered over 10,000 babies and in his spare time volunteered as a physician at Sheltering Arms and other local hospitals; he devoted countless hours to ensure the best possible care for his patients; and
WHEREAS, a genial and caring man, Dr. Minor loved his patients and attended to each one with great compassion and the utmost skill; and
WHEREAS, after his retirement, Dr. Minor built a cabin at Lake Gaston with family members and enjoyed spending time with members of his Kiwanis club and ?WORTS? group (Worn-Out Retired Taskmasters); he also served as a director of Good Neighbor Village, a home for mentally challenged adults; and
WHEREAS, Philip Minor will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret Thomas ?Tommie? Minor; his three surviving children, Chuck, Lynn, and Steve, and their families; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members, friends, and patients; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated physician and outstanding Virginian, Philip LeeAllen Minor, M.D.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Philip LeeAllen Minor, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
