HJ372: Commending the Nelson County High School one-act play ensemble.

WHEREAS, the 2009 - 2010 Nelson County High School one-act play ensemble won the school?s first state championship at the Virginia High School League One Act Play Festival; and
WHEREAS, the hard-working Nelson County High School one-act play ensemble also took second place in the district competition and first place in the regional competition before defeating eight other schools at the Festival; and
WHEREAS, the Nelson County High School one-act play ensemble members chose to perform ?Tuna Fish Eulogy,? a ladder play in which certain lines are spoken by different actors simultaneously; and
WHEREAS, the original play, by playwright Lindsay Price, was written for only four actors, but drama coach Diana Driver and the talented ensemble members rewrote it so that it had parts for 15 actors; and
WHEREAS, the entire ensemble, composed of Nathan Bird, Daniel Dennis, Nicole Shumate, Hannah Lilley, Katie Wood, Megan Robles, Katlin Ashley, Bradley Carter, Yusef Kerl, Taylor Goff, Tye Saunders, Katherine James, Fiona Jones, Ben Spitler, Danyelle Phillips, Meg Linen, John Whalen, Annie Saunders, and Sami Cunningham, rehearsed in the evenings and on weekends to prepare for the competition; and
WHEREAS, Nicole Shumate, who played the role of Miss Scully, received the highest score among the eight actors named as outstanding actors in the Group A division, making her the state Group A Outstanding Actor; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Nelson County High School one-act play ensemble was an overall team effort and a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the theatre students; the leadership of teacher and director Diana Driver; and the support of the students, faculty, and parents of Nelson County High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Nelson County High School one-act play ensemble for its Group A state championship at the Virginia High School League One Act Play Festival; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Diana Driver, the Nelson County High School drama coach, as an expression of the General Assembly?s appreciation of the students? commitment to the performing arts and award-winning productions.
