WHEREAS, Barbara Williams, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Appomattox County, retired on August 31, 2009, after serving her fellow citizens for over four decades; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Williams began her career with the Circuit Court of Appomattox County on August 4, 1969, as a deputy clerk; and
WHEREAS, in 1975 Barbara Williams was appointed by Judge George Abbitt as clerk of the circuit court; and
WHEREAS, a leader in her field, Barbara Williams is recognized statewide by other clerks, attorneys, and judges as an outstanding clerk and administrator; and
WHEREAS, for the past 34 years as clerk, Barbara Williams has built a reputation for integrity, professionalism, and thoroughness, and she is a role model for her peers across the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, dedicated to the well-being of Appomattox County, Barbara Williams also served as clerk to the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors from 1975 to 1988; and
WHEREAS, committed to giving back to the community, Barbara Williams generously volunteers her time and expertise to many civic organizations, including as a leader and valuable member of the Virginia Court Clerks' Association; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Williams is a faithful member of Grace Hills Baptist Church and is active in the church's many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Williams is married to Floyd E. Williams, and the couple enjoys their wonderful family, which includes son Michael Williams and his wife, Victoria; daughter Sheri Word and her husband, T. Scott Word III; and their grandchildren Davis, Amelia, Lacey, and Thomas; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Williams will remain involved in her community, and she looks forward to new adventures, traveling, and spending more quality time with her family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Barbara Williams on her four decades of outstanding public service to the citizens of Appomattox County and the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Barbara Williams as an expression of the General Assembly?s appreciation of her many achievements and best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
