HJ405: Commending Leon J. Parrish.

WHEREAS, Leon J. Parrish, a member of the Amherst County Board of Supervisors and dedicated public servant, retired on December 31, 2009; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Madison Heights in Amherst County, Leon Parrish made his first foray into public service in the early 1980s when he served as a member of the County?s electoral board; and
WHEREAS, Leon Parrish then served on the Amherst County School Board before representing District 5 on the Board of Supervisors from January 1994 to December 31, 2009; he served as chairman of the Board in 1995, 2001, 2005, and 2009; and
WHEREAS, Leon Parrish?s commitment to cooperative communication in public service was evident in his early years of service when he was assigned to the Joint Cooperation Committee, which dealt with the effects of annexation between the Town and County of Amherst; and
WHEREAS, Leon Parrish also served on the Amherst County Planning Commission and the Central Virginia Community Services Board during his tenure on the Board of Supervisors; and
WHEREAS, Leon Parrish has generously given of his time and talents in the community as a member of the Region 2000 board, past master Mason at the Robert F. Braxton Lodge, past commander-in-chief of the Constantine Consistory #1055, and member of the Shriners Aladdin Temple #111; and
WHEREAS, Leon Parrish is a lifelong member of Rose Chapel Baptist Church, where he has served as usher, trustee, treasurer, weekly Bible study leader, choir member, church school adult class leader, and past chairman of the Diaconate Ministry; and
WHEREAS, Leon Parrish retired as an associate engineer from the Paktron Division of Illinois Toolworks, Inc., and looks forward to serving the community as vice president of the Amherst County Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, Leon Parrish looks forward to spending time with his beloved wife of 49 years, Penny Jones Parrish; hunting and fishing; and cruising on the Princess line over the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated public servant, Leon Parrish demonstrated great integrity, passion, and commitment to improving the lives of the residents of Amherst County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend a dedicated public servant and outstanding Virginian, Leon J. Parrish; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Leon J. Parrish as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect and gratitude for his many contributions to Amherst County.
