WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny of Wakefield, a beloved citizen and member of Gilfield Baptist Church, Ivor, is being named Mother of the Church on March 28, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Surry County, Virginia, Portia Wilson McClenny was born March 26, 1922, educated in the Surry County Public School System, and graduated from L.P. Jackson High School; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny married Theodore Bernard McClenny, a farmer in Zuni, in 1940, and became a dedicated wife, mother of five children, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, member of Gilfield Baptist Church, deaconess, and engaged in community service; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny has served Gilfield Baptist Church for more than 65 years, participating on various committees; singing in the choir; hosting ministers, dignitaries, and other church guests for dinners and overnight visits in her family home; and serving as Missionary Mother of the Church; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny is known for her excellent talents such as cooking, butter-making, gardening, and raising chinchillas, calves, and chickens; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny served on the board of the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum helping with preserving farming culture and tradition; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny displayed her butter-making talents at the Southampton County and Virginia State Fairs to keep history alive and provided tours of the farm to local school children; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny hosted African students for summer farm internships before and after visiting Liberia, West Africa, and continues to maintain an open oasis to those far from home; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny worked in the community as a nutrition aide to assist families in lifestyle management related to nutrition, meal planning, and budgeting; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny served as an election official for the Berlin District for over 10 years; and

WHEREAS, Portia Wilson McClenny has been concerned for citizens in need throughout the community and generously gives of her time and talents as an active member of the Berlin-Ivor community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Portia Wilson McClenny on the occasion of being named Mother of Gilfield Baptist Church; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Portia Wilson McClenny as an expression of the General Assembly?s congratulations and respect and admiration for her service to the community.
