WHEREAS, Fort A.P. Hill was created in the 1940s to provide large, unencumbered training lands and ranges that were not available at existing military facilities in the region; and
WHEREAS, the A.P. Hill Military Reservation was formally established in Caroline and Essex Counties, Virginia, on June 11, 1941, as a live-fire artillery and maneuver training facility; and
WHEREAS, Fort A.P. Hill, as a regional training center, remains an important national military facility that provides realistic joint and combined arms training support to America?s Defense Forces, and provides live-fire training for all branches of the Department of Defense and for other federal, state, and local government agencies; and
WHEREAS, the urgent need of the United States government to establish the A.P. Hill Military Reservation in the 1940s resulted in the displacement of over 2,000 Virginians from their homes and lands in the name of national defense; and
WHEREAS, the United States Army has sought to recognize the important sacrifices made by those who were displaced in the 1940s through an oral history project intended to record and preserve the images and stories of former residents; and
WHEREAS, Fort A.P. Hill has compiled images and stories of life in rural Caroline and Essex Counties into a book entitled Wealthy in Heart: Oral History of Life Before Fort A.P. Hill; and
WHEREAS, Wealthy in Heart is intended to serve as a reminder of those communities, towns, and families whose concessions have made the past and future defense of our nation possible; and
WHEREAS, Fort A.P. Hill has provided copies of Wealthy in Heart to former residents, local libraries and organizations, and the Library of Virginia as a resource for citizens of the Commonwealth who are interested in the history of pre-World War II rural communities in Virginia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Fort A.P. Hill, its staff, and the United States Army for their efforts to preserve the history of the Commonwealth for future generations; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Fort A.P. Hill as an expression of the General Assembly?s appreciation for the vital work Fort A.P. Hill does every day to ensure our military?s readiness and our nation?s freedom.
