HJ453: Commending Amelia County on the occasion of its 275th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Amelia County and its proud citizens are celebrating its historic 275th anniversary in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Amelia County, established by a legislative act in 1734, was named for Princess Amelia, the daughter of George II of England, and was created from the counties of Prince George and Brunswick; and
WHEREAS, in 1754 Prince Edward County was formed from lands in Amelia County, which was reduced to its current size when Nottoway County was formed from county lands in 1789; and
WHEREAS, Amelia County and its people have a rich history of involvement in the early formation and continuing growth of America?in 1781 during the American Revolutionary War, the citizenry and strategic buildings were raided by British troops under the command of General Banastre Tarleton; and
WHEREAS, the last major battle of the American Civil War was fought at what is now Sailor?s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, also spelled as in its namesake, the Battle of Sayler?s Creek, which was fought on April 6, 1865; Hillsman House, located at the park, was used as both a Confederate and Union field hospital during the battle; and
WHEREAS, the Army of Northern Virginia retreated across Amelia County, leading to the final engagement of the Civil War at Appomattox Court House, where the Confederate Army under the command of General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union Army under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant; and
WHEREAS, Amelia County records survived the destruction of the American Civil War, it has been told, because the Union Army?s General George Custer placed a guard over the Amelia County Clerk?s Office in 1865 with orders that all records be protected; and
WHEREAS, today, Amelia County is a pleasant place to live, work, and raise a family, and the dynamic community and its residents support local and regional civic activities and events, including the Central Virginia Bluegrass Festival, Central Virginia Antique Engine & Tractor Show, Amelia Day, Annual Arts & Crafts Show, Battle of Sayler?s Creek Reenactment, and the Annual Christmas Parade; and
WHEREAS, Amelia County is managed by a county administrator that reports to a five-member board of supervisors and is protected by a 15-member sheriff?s department and 85 volunteer firefighters serving at five fire stations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Amelia County and its citizens on the occasion of its 275th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Board of Supervisors of Amelia County as an expression of the General Assembly?s appreciation of the county?s diverse history and culture and its role in the prosperity of the Commonwealth.
