WHEREAS, William E. Obenchain, Jr., of Vinton, a beloved and respected citizen and an outstanding community leader, died on December 23, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Vinton, William E. ?Billy? Obenchain, Jr., was the beloved son of Frances Obenchain and the late William E. Obenchain, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his community and the safety and well-being of his neighbors, William Obenchain worked for the Roanoke City Fire Department for 25 years, retiring in 2007; and

WHEREAS, always supporting the best interests of his fellow citizens, William Obenchain served on the Vinton Town Council for 15 years; and

WHEREAS, William Obenchain was a lifetime member of the Vinton Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Vinton First Aid Crew; and

WHEREAS, because of his knowledge and experience in emergency services, William Obenchain was an adjunct instructor for the Virginia Department of Fire Programs; and

WHEREAS, William Obenchain was a faithful member of Vinton Baptist Church and was active in the church?s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, William Obenchain will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his wife of 29 years, Karen Lawhorn Obenchain; his sons and their wonderful families, Jeremy Ryan and Samantha Obenchain, Zachary Randall and Danielle Obenchain, and grandson and the joy of his life, William Hunter Obenchain; his mother, Frances Obenchain; his brother and sister; and numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine public servant and outstanding Virginian, William E. Obenchain, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William E. Obenchain, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
