WHEREAS, Lucias T. Mitchell, a beloved coach and educator who was the former head basketball coach at Norfolk State University, died on February 23, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell received a bachelor?s degree from Jackson State University, where he played on the basketball team, and a master?s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington; and
WHEREAS, a devoted advocate of the balanced student-athlete, Lucias Mitchell enjoyed a distinguished career as head basketball coach for Alabama State University, Norfolk State University, and Kentucky State University; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell cared deeply for his students and players and encouraged them to excel on the court and in the classroom; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell became the head basketball coach at Alabama State University in 1963, marking his first head coaching job at the collegiate level; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell served eight years as the head basketball coach for Kentucky State University, winning three consecutive National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics basketball championships, one of only three NAIA coaches to achieve the distinction; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell later became the head coach at Norfolk State University and also taught several health courses, directed the driver education and traffic safety program, and managed the HIV/AIDS program; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell placed great value on professional education and was actively involved in the National Health and Fitness Association and other related organizations for several decades; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in education and athletics throughout his career and was recognized for his success by induction into the Kentucky State University Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Lucias Mitchell will be greatly missed by his children, Mychael, Davey, and Nickol, and their families, and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and coach, Lucias T. Mitchell; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lucias T. Mitchell as an expression of the House of Delegates? respect for his memory.
