WHEREAS, Phillip C. Stone, the admired and respected president of Bridgewater College, will retire on June 30, 2010, after 16 years of exemplary leadership; and

WHEREAS, a native of Bassett, Virginia, Phillip Stone received a bachelor?s degree from Bridgewater College, attended the University of Chicago Graduate School of Economics, and received a law degree from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, prior to serving as president of Bridgewater College, Phillip Stone practiced law for 24 years with the Harrisonburg law firm of Wharton, Aldhizer, and Weaver, where he specialized in estate planning, corporate, and health law; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Stone also served as president of the Virginia Bar Association in 1997 while president of Bridgewater College; and

WHEREAS, a Bridgewater College trustee since 1975, Phillip Stone took office as the seventh president of Bridgewater College on August 1, 1994; and

WHEREAS, as former moderator of the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference and chairman of the general board of the Church of the Brethren, with whom Bridgewater College is affiliated, Phillip Stone brought a unique understanding of the Church of the Brethren to Bridgewater College and worked diligently to maintain the school?s strong ties with the church; and

WHEREAS, under Phillip Stone?s leadership, Bridgewater College experienced great progress and expansion in all areas of campus life, including increased academic and athletic excellence, many capital improvements, and an increased endowment; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Stone worked tirelessly to achieve the goals of the college?s strategic plan and saw enrollment almost double and facilities and technology expand; and

WHEREAS, the college also implemented its Personal Development Portfolio program, which gives students a framework for documenting four dimensions of personal development while at Bridgewater College; and

WHEREAS, during Phillip Stone?s tenure, Bridgewater College instituted its Every Student, One Commitment Campaign, to help provide the financial underpinnings for the school?s future; and

WHEREAS, an admired leader, Phillip Stone served as chairman of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and as chair of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Stone has also generously given of his time and talents as a member of the board of Rockingham Memorial Hospital for nine years, including five years as chairman, and was appointed by Governor Warner to serve on the Commonwealth Transportation Board (2002?2005); and

WHEREAS, Phillip Stone is also the founder of The Lincoln Society of Virginia and serves on the advisory board of the National Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, as well as on the advisory board of The Lincoln Forum; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Stone brought great enthusiasm and passion to the presidency of Bridgewater College and worked with great distinction on behalf of his alma mater; he looks forward to spending time with family, traveling, and maintaining his affiliation with local historical groups; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Phillip C. Stone on his 16 years of outstanding leadership as the president of Bridgewater College; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Phillip C. Stone as an expression of the General Assembly?s gratitude for his many achievements and best wishes in all his future endeavors.
