Celebrating the life of Clifton A. Bernard.

WHEREAS, Clifton A. Bernard of Chesapeake, a respected citizen, educator, and businessman, died on October 16, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Clifton ?Cliff? A. Bernard was born on November 12, 1947, in Norfolk, the son of Mary Sprouse and Franklyn A. Bernard; graduated in 1966 from Great Bridge High School; and earned a bachelor?s degree in mathematics from East Carolina University, where he attended on an athletic scholarship; and

WHEREAS, Cliff Bernard returned to his hometown and joined Great Bridge Junior High School as a mathematics teacher and coach; and

WHEREAS, while completing a master?s degree in administration from the University of Virginia, Cliff Bernard taught mathematics, coached wrestling and football, and served as athletic director for his alma mater, Great Bridge High School; and

WHEREAS, Cliff Bernard started his own company, Bernard Builders Ltd., in 1984, and he built custom homes in the Hampton Roads area for 14 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1998, Cliff Bernard returned to the Chesapeake Public Schools as a technology integration specialist at Hugo A. Owens Middle School, until retiring in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Cliff Bernard enjoyed life and new adventures, and he was an avid sports fan, fisherman, boater, and windsurfer; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man and community supporter, Cliff Bernard will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 41 years, Carolyn Bernard; his children, Laura Ann and Michael Ryan Bernard; his sisters and brother and other loving relatives; and his numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Clifton A. Bernard; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Clifton A. Bernard as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
