SJ278: Celebrating the life of Yvonne Satterfield Six.
WHEREAS, Yvonne Satterfield Six, a respected and beloved citizen from Hampton, died on June 9, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of New York, Yvonne Six was born on June 29, 1937, to loving parents Julia Hastings and Charles Satterfield; and
WHEREAS, a hardworking student, Yvonne Six attended Catholic school before receiving a degree in Aviation Management from Adelphi University; and
WHEREAS, Yvonne Six began a successful and distinguished 31-year career with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as one of the first female toll booth collectors at the Lincoln Tunnel; and
WHEREAS, a respected and valued employee, Yvonne Six worked her way up at the Port Authority and was appointed to the position of 9/9 supervisor; she was the first black female to hold that position as well as the highest ranking female supervisor in Port Authority history; and
WHEREAS, upon moving to Virginia, Yvonne Six dedicated herself to her family, church, and Hampton High School and later Hampton University basketball; and
WHEREAS, affectionately known as ?Mama Six,? Yvonne Six was frequently found on the sidelines of area basketball games, rooting for her beloved Hampton High School and Hampton University teams with her rosary in her hand; and
WHEREAS, Yvonne Six particularly loved to encourage the youth she knew to strive for excellence and blessed the lives of all who knew her with her loving and strong spirit, quick wit, and compassionate nature; and
WHEREAS, a devoted mother, Yvonne Six will be greatly missed by her loving children, David and Dorinda, and their families, including her grandchildren Kyle, Keisha, Mia, and Joycelyn, and great-grandchildren Tyler and Cheniya; her numerous other family members; and her many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected and beloved citizen of the Commonwealth, Yvonne Satterfield Six; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Yvonne Satterfield Six as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for her memory.
