A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 24.2-672.1, relating to elections; notice of changes in election results in certain statewide elections.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 24.2-672.1 as follows:

§ 24.2-672.1. Notice of changes in election results in certain statewide elections.

This section applies to any statewide election in which the number of votes between the winning candidate and the candidate with the next highest number of votes is less than 1% of the votes cast for the two such candidates as shown by the statements of results after the close of the polls on the election day.

Each local electoral board shall report to the State Board of Elections within 24 hours any change, with an explanation of that change, made in the results stated on the election day and at any time through the conclusion of the certification of the abstracts of votes made out pursuant to § 24.2-675.

The State Board shall notify the public through the Internet of changes made in the results as it receives the information from the local electoral boards.
