HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 418

Commending Pam L. Michell.
Patrons-- Amundson, Englin and Sickles; Senators: Puller and Ticer

WHEREAS, Washingtonian magazine has named Pam Michell as a 2005 Washingtonian of the Year, the second consecutive year she has won the distinguished award; and

WHEREAS, Pam Michell earned a bachelor's degree in government from Smith College, received a master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University, and graduated from Leadership Washington in 1992; and

WHEREAS, from 1976 to 1981, Pam Michell was employed by the United States Department of Transportation, where she developed civil rights policies and programs and served as the special assistant to the director of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration; and

WHEREAS, prior to shelter administrative work, Pam Michell was the director of the Information and Referral Office of Arlington County and served as the special assistant to the vice president for communications at The Washington Post, where she developed a charitable contributions policy and education programs; and

WHEREAS, Pam Michell began her work with homeless individuals as the coordinator of her church’s participation in a rotating shelter program in Arlington during the winter of 1985; she directed six programs in succession for homeless women from 1988 to 1990 at Luther Place Memorial Church in downtown Washington, and she worked at the House of Ruth; and

WHEREAS, Pam Michell joined New Hope Housing, Inc., as the executive director in November 1990; New Hope Housing, Inc., is a nonprofit, community-based agency that provides shelter and opportunities to seek a better life to homeless families and individuals through services that include five shelters, six transitional housing programs, and two permanent supportive housing programs; and

WHEREAS, during Pam Michell's tenure, New Hope Housing, Inc., has been the recipient of the United Way’s In My Back Yard Award, Leadership Fairfax’s award for Excellence in Leadership, Fairfax County’s Human Rights Award, and the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s Best Housing Organization award; and

WHEREAS, in 2005 Pam Michell was honored by the Zonta Club of Fairfax County as one of its Women of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Pam Michell is an active and devoted member of the Church in the World Committee at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arlington; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Pam Michell as a recipient of the 2005 Washingtonian of the Year Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pam Michell as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her many accomplishments.
