HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5004

Commending the Reverend Dr. Robert Lee Pettis.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Robert Lee Pettis is recognized for his 25 years of loyal service and ministry to Zion Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Pettis was born in San Francisco, California; graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in religion and philosophy from Bishop College in Dallas, Texas; earned a master of divinity degree from Virginia Union University, School of Theology; and was one of the first candidates to receive a doctor of ministry degree with emphasis in church management from Virginia Union University in 1993; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Pettis was baptized at the age of three, called to preach at the age of eight, licensed to preach at 16, and ordained in 1976; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Pettis has served as the director of the Youth Ministry for the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, as the first vice president and president of the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Richmond, and as a board member of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention and the Baptist General Convention; and

WHEREAS, on May 29, 1981, Reverend Pettis joined Zion Baptist Church as its head minister and has faithfully served the congregation for 25 years; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Pettis is a respected preacher, teacher, and author and is in great demand for ministry and revivals throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Pettis and his wife Palma Duncan Pettis are a devoted couple and the proud parents of three children; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Reverend Dr. Robert Lee Pettis on his 25 years of loyal service to Zion Baptist Church; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Dr. Robert Lee Pettis as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for continued success in his ministry.
