HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5075

Commending the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce.

WHEREAS, on April 19, 2006, the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce was named Partner of the Year for 2005-2006 by the Fairfax County Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, the annual Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) Partner of the Year is the highest business-school partnership honor given by the school system and is awarded to entities that provide outstanding civic leadership and public service that significantly impacts the students; and

WHEREAS, a gala awards ceremony to honor the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce and other award winners was held on May 25, 2006, at Falls Church High School; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce is recognized for its impressive efforts in preparing tomorrow’s workforce; and

WHEREAS, the Chamber’s Education Committee brings together an incredible array of talent and expertise from both schools and businesses to produce programs such as Ethics Day, Greater Dulles Area Student Job Fair, and the Reality Store; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce has a long-standing partnership with FCPS and the Education Committee collaborates on a variety of school-business projects with Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, Mountain View Alternative, and Westfield high schools and Chantilly Academy; and

WHEREAS, in the 2005-2006 school year, the Education Committee hosted the third annual Student Job Fair and assisted Herndon High School in piloting a Reality Store workshop, and helped Westfield High School organize and recruit volunteers for an Ethics Day event; and

WHEREAS, among its numerous successful civic activities, the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce presents a Teacher of the Year award for each of its partner schools, awards a Business and Technology scholarship for its members' employees and their dependents, and connects students and potential employers through Ethics Days and other initiatives; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce is the 12th largest chamber in the Washington Metropolitan area and is highly successful because of the dedication of its outstanding members, their employees and families, and countless enthusiastic and civic-minded volunteers; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce has been an excellent resource for greater Dulles area businesses and the communities they serve for nearly half a century; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce as the Fairfax County Public Schools Partner of the Year for 2005-2006; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Chamber President and CEO Eileen Curtis as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the Chamber’s valuable community service and best wishes for success in all of its future endeavors.
