HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 37

Celebrating the life of Warren C. Spivey, Jr.
Patron-- Jones, S.C.

WHEREAS, Warren C. Spivey, Jr., of Suffolk, respected citizen and owner of Spivey Rentals, died March 1, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Warren Spivey loved baseball and his greatest joy was building baseball fields to provide young people the opportunity to play on fields and facilities far superior to what he experienced as a child; and

WHEREAS, Warren Spivey grew up in Hertford County, North Carolina, was an excellent athlete and above average pitcher and was offered a contract in minor league baseball; and

WHEREAS, a self-made businessman, Warren Spivey  briefly worked in trucking and found his niche in rentals, starting his own successful rental supply company; and

WHEREAS, in the 1990s, Warren Spivey extended the warning track on the baseball field at Nansemond River High School in Suffolk; this was the first of many major improvements, which included new lights, an irrigation system, a scoreboard, and a concession stand; and

WHEREAS, Warren Spivey did this for the Nansemond Warriors, because he liked "to see a baseball field look good," but also took great pride in the young players, lining and grading their field before games and was one of their biggest fans; and

WHEREAS, when his son Evan attended Virginia Wesleyan in Norfolk, Warren Spivey built an excellent field for the Marlins, supplying and installing the sod himself; and

WHEREAS, Warren Spivey ran golf tournaments to help support Old Dominion University athletes and was honored with the school's Bud Metheny Award in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Warren Spivey magnanimously supported many school athletic programs with his time, talents, and fundraising ability; and

WHEREAS, Warren Spivey enjoyed mentoring young people and volunteered as coach of a Colt League team, head of an American Legion team, and was the owner of the Outer Banks Daredevils, a college summer league team; and

WHEREAS, a kind and generous community benefactor, Warren Spivey will be fondly remembered and missed by his loving family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Suffolk County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates mourn the passing of an outstanding supporter of young people and a fine Virginian, Warren C. Spivey, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Warren C. Spivey, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ great respect for his memory.
