Celebrating the life of Muriel Louise Smith Goode.

WHEREAS, Muriel Louise Smith Goode of Mechanicsville, a respected citizen, former federal employee, and public servant, died on October 4, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Muriel Goode was born to Willie and Martha Smith and lived in very poor conditions in rural Alleghany County; she moved to the City of Covington when she was about 10 years old; and

WHEREAS, Muriel Goode had seven siblings and was especially close to her three sisters, who traveled together in the United States and abroad and maintained a very close relationship throughout their lives; and

WHEREAS, Muriel Smith married soon after high school and had a son before she was 20 years old; she was extremely proud of her son, Raymond, a professor at the University of Iowa, and dearly loved her two grandsons and her daughter-in-law; and

WHEREAS, Muriel Smith met William Goode while she was working at the Defense General Supply Center, and the couple married in 1981; and

WHEREAS, Muriel Goode worked for the General Assembly of Virginia as an administrative assistant for Senator Emmett W. Hanger, Jr., and she was an invaluable contributor to his office staff and a tremendous support to the constituents of the 24th District; and

WHEREAS, Muriel Goode was an active and devoted member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church since 2001; and

WHEREAS, often a great source of strength for her family, Muriel Goode was devoted to helping her mother, her family, and people in need in the church and the community; and

WHEREAS, Muriel Goode will be fondly remembered for her generous and giving spirit and will be sorely missed by her family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the congregation of Fairfield Presbyterian Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginian, Muriel Louise Smith Goode; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Muriel Louise Smith Goode as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
