SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 211
Offered February 9, 2006
Commending the Paul VI Catholic High School girls' cross country team.
Patrons-- Devolites Davis, Cuccinelli and O'Brien

WHEREAS, the Paul VI Catholic High School girls' cross country team won the 2005 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championship, the Virginia State Catholic Championship, and the Virginia Independent Schools (VIS) Cross Country Championship by defeating 40 other schools and their 230 long distance athletes; and

WHEREAS, the Paul VI Panthers, from Fairfax County, completed the 2005 season with the first triple crown championship win in 11 years for the school; and

WHEREAS, the Panthers mounted a true team effort, winning the WCAC with six of their seven allowed athletes in the top 20, winning the Virginia State Catholic Championship with seven athletes in the top 12, and winning the VIS with five of 10 allowed runners in the top 22; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Independent Schools Cross Country Association sponsors the highest level championship among all private schools in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in the VIS championship, the Panthers' top five runners completed the 3.2-mile course before 218 of the state's best female long distance runners; and

WHEREAS, the Paul VI Panthers--senior Jen Scolese; juniors Kelsey Budd, Nichole Kauffmann, Michelle Kew, Caroline Manning, Rosie Loftus, Tessa Reed, and Lee Shine; sophomores Meg Clark, Mackenzie Singh, and Kate Still; and freshman Natalie Cowden--were led by Head Coach Melanie Kiernan and assistants Keith Mitchell, Joe Gesker, and Mike Kiernan; and

WHEREAS, in displaying leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the regular season and the postseason tournaments, the Panthers girls' cross country team proudly represented Paul VI Catholic High School and its supporters in the Fairfax community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Paul VI Catholic High School girls' cross country team on its 2005 triple crown of championships; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the head cross country coach Melanie Kiernan in honor of the outstanding success of the 2005 Paul VI Catholic High School Panthers girls’ cross country team.
