Celebrating the life of Bobby Gene Pollard.

WHEREAS, Bobby Gene Pollard, one of the longest-serving members of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, died in a farming accident on January 18, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Gene Pollard, the son of Hubert Burrell and Mary Ollie Smith Pollard, was a Bedford County native and worked for 38 years for Norfolk Southern Railroad; and

WHEREAS, a dynamic and caring person, Bobby Gene Pollard was first elected to the Bedford County Board of Supervisors in 1983 and served until 1990 when he resigned because of a job transfer; and

WHEREAS, after moving back to Bedford County, Bobby Gene Pollard was again elected to the Board of Supervisors, serving from 2000 until his death; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Gene Pollard was considered an elder statesman by his fellow board members and they trusted his judicious advice and vast experience; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure on the Board of Supervisors, Bobby Gene Pollard saw a great deal of change in Bedford County, including the establishment of a county zoning ordinance, and he was instrumental in the construction of the county's new nursing home, which was dedicated in December 2006; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his service as a county supervisor, Bobby Gene Pollard was appointed by three governors to serve on the Virginia Recreational Facilities Authority and the Virginia Cemetery Board and he served for eight years with the 29th Division, 116th Infantry of the Virginia National Guard; and

WHEREAS, a devoted Christian and family man, Bobby Gene Pollard was a faithful member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and was actively involved in his community as a member of the Bedford Lion's Club and as a volunteer at the Bedford City/County Museum and the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Gene Pollard will be remembered for his bright smile and firm handshake and will be sorely missed by his wife of 48 years, Annie St. Clair Pollard, their daughter and son-in-law and two grandsons, and many other family, friends, and supporters; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of an esteemed public servant and a fine Virginian, Bobby Gene Pollard; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bobby Gene Pollard as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
