Commending the William Fleming High School boys' basketball team.

WHEREAS, the 2007 William Fleming High School boys' basketball team capped an exceptional season by winning the Virginia High School League, Group AA, state basketball championship by defeating Brunswick High School 66 to 57; and

WHEREAS, the William Fleming High School Colonels (24-6) won the 2007 Virginia High School League Group AA boys' basketball state title to the cheers of 7,000 high school basketball fans in an exciting championship game on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center; and

WHEREAS, the victory was especially significant for the players and the entire student body, because the Colonels have not won a state basketball championship since 1955; and

WHEREAS, on their way to clinching the Group AA state title, the William Fleming High School boys' basketball team members won the Blue Ridge District, the Blue Ridge District tournament, and the Region III tournament runner-up honors; and

WHEREAS, in the state tournament, the William Fleming High School began with a triumph over Magna Vista High School in a quarterfinal game and then defeated Waynesboro High School 57-48 in a decisive semifinal win; and

WHEREAS, all of the hard-working Colonels made valuable contributions in a tremendous team effort in the championship games and throughout the season; and in a remarkable run, the team won 15 games in a row, which included the Holiday Hoopla Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the William Fleming High School boys' basketball team players are seniors Derlin Kumbi, Ryan Pannell, Vincent Pierson, and Marcus Smalls; juniors Bryan Ashford, Patrick Curtis, Andre Edwards, and Joe Reid; and sophomores Stephon Anderson, Troy Daniels, Jamelle Hagins, and Shaquan Manning; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2007 William Fleming High School boys' basketball team is a tribute to the perseverance of the players, the leadership of Head Coach Mickey Hardy and Assistant Coach Marshall Ashford and their staff, and the support of the students, faculty, and parents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the William Fleming High School boys' basketball team on its 2007 Group AA state title; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mickey Hardy as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the William Fleming High School boys' basketball team.
