Celebrating the life of Eugene Williamson McCaul.
Patrons-- Peace; Senator: Norment

WHEREAS, Eugene Williamson McCaul of Hanover County, age 91, a respected citizen and revered local attorney who practiced law in the Richmond Metropolitan area for over 65 years, died on May 27, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Williamson “Bud” McCaul was born on June 15, 1916, grew up in Highland Park in Richmond, received a degree in business administration from the University of Richmond in 1938, and earned a law degree from T.C. Williams School of Law in 1941; and

WHEREAS, Bud McCaul served his country as an intelligence officer in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II, rose to commanding officer of the Naval Reserve Intelligence Division of the Fifth Naval District, and retired from a sterling military career with the rank of captain; and

WHEREAS, following the war, Bud McCaul began his distinguished 65-year law career by establishing his own firm, McCaul, Grigsby, Pearsall, Manning & Davis, now Pearsall and Pearsall, and in 1986 he became a partner in the Mechanicsville firm of McCaul, Martin, Evans & Cook, P.C.; and

WHEREAS, a conservationist and environmentalist dedicated to positive growth in Hanover County, Bud McCaul served as a visionary leader in the practice of real estate and zoning law and was instrumental in the zoning development of King’s Charter, the county’s first planned community, as well as many other innovative projects throughout his lifetime; and

WHEREAS, Bud McCaul was a great supporter of his beloved University of Richmond, a member of the Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and an active member of the Alumni Board from 1946 to 1983, serving as secretary for 30 years and as legal counsel for over 33 years; and

WHEREAS, Bud McCaul gave his time and expertise to many professional and civic organizations over the years, serving as a member and leader of the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association, the Richmond Bar Association, the Hanover Bar Association, and the Richmond Board of Zoning Appeals; and

WHEREAS, in 1998 Bud McCaul was honored as a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation for his outstanding public service and many contributions to excellence in the practice of law; and

WHEREAS, Bud McCaul was a faithful member of Immanuel Episcopal Church in Old Church, where he served as a vestryman and counselor and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, widely regarded as “the quintessential southern gentleman,” as well as a “renaissance man,” Bud McCaul was an avid reader and a Civil War and local history scholar, and he immensely enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his friends; and

WHEREAS, Bud McCaul will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted wife of 29 years, Hiroko Takemura McCaul; his son, Eugene W. “Bill” McCaul, Jr.; his daughter, Mary E. “Betsy” McCaul; his stepson, Cecil Hooker; his stepdaughter, Rebecca Thomas; his four grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine attorney and Virginia gentleman, Eugene Williamson McCaul; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Eugene Williamson McCaul as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
