AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE

A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 23-9.2:3.7, relating to course credits for active duty military students.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 23-9.2:3.7 as follows:

23-9.2:3.7. Course credit; active duty military students.

The governing boards of each public institution of higher education shall implement policies that apply to students who are called to active military duty during an academic semester. Such policies shall include options that allow students who have completed 75 percent of the course at the time of activation and who meet other specified criteria to receive full course credit.

23-9.2:3.7. Course credit; active duty military students.

The governing boards of each public institution of higher education shall implement policies providing that full course credit shall be granted to students who (i) are called to active military duty during an academic semester; (ii) have completed 75 percent of the course at the time of activation; (iii) have achieved a 3.0 grade point average in the course at the time of activation; and (iv) pass a final exam provided by the institution upon such students' return from active deployment.
