Celebrating the life of Peggy Brown Byrd.

WHEREAS, Peggy Brown Byrd, GRI, a respected realtor and much loved member of the Suffolk community, died on January 19, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Byrd was born in the rural community of Sunbury, North Carolina, on November 21, 1938; and

WHEREAS, after winning the Miss North Carolina title in 1959, Peggy Byrd went on to earn “Miss Congeniality” honors at the Miss Universe Pageant; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of the University of Missouri, Peggy Byrd believed in the power of education and always pursued new opportunities to learn, improve, and expand her knowledge; and

WHEREAS, before coming to Virginia, Peggy Byrd established a career as a legal assistant; her experience and skill enabled her to start her own escrow business; and

WHEREAS, after she settled in Suffolk, Peggy Byrd became a realtor and was a leader and positive influence in the real estate profession; and

WHEREAS, always promoting the ideal that all realtors present themselves in a professional manner, Peggy Byrd served as the president of the Suffolk-Franklin Board of Realtors and the Hampton Roads Realtors Association, as well as served on various local and state committees on real estate issues; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Byrd was a two-time Realtor of the Year award winner and a member of the Million Dollar Sales Club; she received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Real Estate in 2005; and

WHEREAS, a great community supporter, Peggy Byrd generously gave her time and expertise as a member of the Board of Visitors of Chowan University and many civic organizations; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Byrd was an associate with GSH Real Estate, Hampton Roads Properties, Tidewater Properties, Ltd., and Chorey & Associates Realty, Ltd.; she served as a broker licensed in Virginia and North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Byrd was a faithful member of Oakland United Church of Christ and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Byrd will be fondly remembered for her tremendous ability to connect with others and for her strong commitment to her family, friends, and profession and will be greatly missed by her husband of 46 years, Jack R. Byrd, and many close family members and good friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Peggy Brown Byrd; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Peggy Brown Byrd as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
