WHEREAS, Stephanie A. Doyle, a sixth-grade United States History I teacher at Breckinridge Middle School of the Roanoke City Public Schools, is Virginia’s Teacher of the Year 2009; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Doyle, Region 6 Teacher of the Year, was chosen as Virginia’s Teacher of the Year from eight regional teacher finalists and was awarded the state's highest honor in Richmond on October 24, 2008, in a ceremony sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education in cooperation with corporate sponsors; and

WHEREAS, the Teacher of the Year program recognizes and honors teachers who represent the best in teaching across the nation and the acclaimed award winners serve as ambassadors promoting the teaching profession and quality education for all students; and

WHEREAS, at a White House ceremony in April 2009, Stephanie Doyle will represent the Commonwealth in the annual National Teacher of the Year selection process, which is sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers, Scholastic Inc., and the ING Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Doyle graduated from Roanoke College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has taught at Breckinridge Middle School for four years; and

WHEREAS, an inspirational role model and outstanding teacher at Breckinridge Middle School, Stephanie Doyle serves as the sixth-grade team leader and is a valuable contributor to the school’s site-based leadership team; and

WHEREAS, a gifted and knowledgeable history teacher, Stephanie Doyle uses her many talents and great enthusiasm to instill the joy of learning in her students; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Doyle also established a special mentoring program for middle school girls known as GROW, the "Girls Rising Onto Womanhood" group, which helps at-risk students academically and socially; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Doyle's GROW members receive help with homework, participate in volunteer activities, and visit museums and experience other cultural events; and

WHEREAS, a leader in the education community, Stephanie Doyle is an active member of numerous teacher associations and professional organizations, including the National Museum of the American Indian, Organization of American Historians, Virginia Council for Social Studies, and Civil War Preservation Trust; and

WHEREAS, a talented and dedicated educator, Stephanie A. Doyle epitomizes the vital role that innovative and compassionate teachers play in the education of Virginia’s children; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Stephanie A. Doyle on her well-deserved recognition as Virginia’s Teacher of the Year 2009; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stephanie A. Doyle as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for her commitment to the young people of Roanoke and the Commonwealth.
