Celebrating the life of Jesse Baker Mills, Sr.

WHEREAS, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., was born in Richmond on November 25, 1929, and entered eternal rest on December 16, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., was educated in Richmond City Public Schools, and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School; and

WHEREAS, after graduation, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., continued his education and graduated from the Smith Madden School of Business; and

WHEREAS, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., served his country valiantly as a sergeant in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on January 13, 1953; and

WHEREAS, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., served as the housing manager for the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority for 23 years; and following his retirement in 1992, he was employed by the Consolidated Bank and Trust Company; and

WHEREAS, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., served most commendably as the treasurer for the Historic Jackson Ward Association for many years, particularly during the association’s early years, and together with his wife, gave valuable support and assistance to the association and was actively involved in its many activities over the years; and

WHEREAS, as a longtime member of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., lived out his profession of Christian faith earnestly and with zeal, serving as a trustee and as a member of the Finance and Personnel ministries of the church; and

WHEREAS, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., was a dynamic and effective member of his community, lending his time, resources, and expertise to the Old Timers Club as financial secretary, and as treasurer of the Historic Jackson Ward Association and the King David Lodge #28 A. & F. M.; and

WHEREAS, a magnificent cook, counselor, and confidant to family and friends; a generous and amicable gentleman; and a man of remarkable energy and talent, Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., will be mourned and missed by his family and many friends, neighbors, and colleagues; and

WHEREAS Jesse Baker Mills, Sr.’s, legacy and noteworthy achievements and contributions to his family and community, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jesse Baker Mills, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jesse Baker Mills, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his life and memory, and appreciation for his selfless contributions to the people of the City of Richmond and the Commonwealth.
