Celebrating the life of Calvin Perrow Carter.

WHEREAS, Calvin Perrow Carter of Leesville, a beloved and respected citizen and outstanding local leader and businessman, died on September 15, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Carter was born on December 27, 1924, the son of Charles Lewis and Euphan Perrow Carter, attended school in a two-room schoolhouse known as Leesville Elementary through the 7th grade, and graduated from Altavista High School in 1942; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Carter bravely served his country during World War II in the United States Marines; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Calvin Carter returned home to run Carter's Store for his father and quickly became the community's favorite proprietor—a great listener and friend whom residents could always count on for good conversation and sound advice; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Carter's family has owned and operated the 1800s-era big white country store in Lynch Station, with its wood-burning stove, famous hoop cheese, and old farming implements, for four generations, and his son Lee Carter will now carry on the family tradition; and

WHEREAS, first elected to office in 1979, Calvin Carter served on the Campbell County Board of Supervisors, representing the Altavista District for 28 years, from 1980 until his retirement in January 2008; and

WHEREAS, well-known as the "face of county government," Calvin Carter served as chairman of the Campbell County Board of Supervisors in 1983, 1989, 1996, and 2003; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Carter was a big supporter of the Campbell County Library system and was instrumental in the funding and building of the Timbrook Branch Library; and

WHEREAS, always ready to help others in any way he could, Calvin Carter gave his time and expertise to many civic organizations over the years, and he was a longtime and active member of the Masons' Campbell Lodge #316 AF & AM; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Carter was a faithful member of Leesville United Methodist Church and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Carter will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and his community and will be greatly missed by his wife Adelle Tribble Carter; his two sons, Chip and Lee, and their families, including his five grandchildren; and his many friends and admirers in Campbell County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a dedicated local leader and outstanding Virginian, Calvin Perrow Carter; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Calvin Perrow Carter as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
