HJ871: Commending J. Roy Geiger.
WHEREAS, New Kent County School Superintendent J. Roy Geiger retires in June 2009 after more than 30 years of dedicated and outstanding service to the citizens of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, during his exceptional tenure as superintendent, Dr. Geiger has been committed to providing a quality education for Virginia's children, and his dedication to teachers, school staff, and students has had a profound impact on the community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Geiger earned a master’s degree in 1977, an educational specialist degree in 1986, and a doctoral degree in educational administration from The College of William and Mary in 1994; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Geiger has been an exemplary administrator who has responded to the educational needs of Virginia's children as a teacher, administrator, superintendent, and lifelong advocate of public education; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Geiger has served numerous professional and civic organizations over the years, including as a member of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, the American Association of School Administrators, and the Virginia High School League’s Executive Committee, as chair and member of the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Steering Committee, as chair of the Virginia Health Source Board of the Richmond Bon Secours Health System, and he served in numerous leadership roles for Region 1 Superintendents; and
WHEREAS, highly respected for his knowledge in the areas of public education and leadership on the local and state levels, Dr. Geiger has served as chair and member of the William and Mary School-University Research Network, and he was a respected speaker on leadership and administrative issues at local and regional educational conferences; and
WHEREAS, throughout his distinguished career in public education, Dr. Geiger has received many awards and accolades for his many contributions to education in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, through his steadfast leadership, Dr. Geiger has supported public policies to protect and enhance the quality of education for all students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend J. Roy Geiger on his 30 years of valuable service to the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to J. Roy Geiger as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his many achievements and best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
