Commending the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club.

WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club celebrates its 70th anniversary of service to the Weyers Cave community in 2009; and

WHEREAS, since 1928, Ruritan Clubs have dedicated themselves to improving communities and building a better America through fellowship, goodwill, and community service; and

WHEREAS, the second oldest club in Augusta County, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club was organized and received its charter on April 14, 1939, and held its first meeting at St. Andrew’s Evangelical and Reformed Church; and

WHEREAS, during the 1940s, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club supported the war effort by encouraging all families to establish Victory Gardens; after the war, the Club helped establish the Weyers Cave Fire Department and several members of the club were members of the first fire company; and

WHEREAS, the next decade brought many improvements to Weyers Cave as the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club worked to install street lights and lights at the ball park; the Club also organized a church softball league; and

WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club was instrumental in providing for the future growth of Weyers Cave in the 1960s as it worked with the Augusta County Authorities to have a water and sewer system installed, with several members pledging financial support; and

WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club purchased several acres of land in the 1970s that allowed it to expand its services to the community over the years, including the addition of a picnic area, restroom, playground, walking trail, and soccer field; and

WHEREAS, Weyers Cave celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1974, and a Ruritan, the Reverend Harold Skelton, wrote and released a book on the history of Weyers Cave in honor of its centennial; and

WHEREAS, in the 1990s the Houff Foundation graciously contributed funds that allowed the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club to erect a Community Center Building that has meeting rooms, a large kitchen, and an auditorium that allows the club to better serve the community; and

WHEREAS, the goal of the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club is “To make our community a better place to live” and in its 70 years of existence the members of the Ruritan Club have generously given of their time and talents and made Weyers Cave a better place to live; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club on the occasion of its 70th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for the club’s community service.
