HJ947: Celebrating the life of Carlton Miles Southworth.
WHEREAS, Carlton Miles Southworth of New Kent, a dedicated businessman and community volunteer, died on February 7, 2009; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated alumnus, Carlton Southworth graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; and
WHEREAS, after graduation, Carlton Southworth proudly served his country as a captain in the United States Army during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Carlton Southworth married the late Joyce Binnix and together they raised four wonderful children; and
WHEREAS, an excellent engineer and astute businessman, Carlton Southworth entered the mechanical contracting business, eventually opening his own mechanical contracting company, Southworth Mechanical Corporation, in 1983; he worked there until his retirement; and
WHEREAS, a man of integrity and an excellent example to youth, Carlton Southworth was actively involved with the Boy Scouts for many years and was particularly proud that all his sons and a grandson achieved the rank of Eagle Scout; and
WHEREAS, a race horse breeder, Carlton Southworth enjoyed spending time outside with his horses and was a longtime member of the Virginia Thoroughbred Association; and
WHEREAS, Carlton Southworth served his beloved alma mater as a member of the Ut Prosim Society, Hokies for Higher Education, and Virginia Tech Alumni Board from 1990 to 1997; he received an Alumni Distinguished Service Award; and
WHEREAS, Carlton Southworth gave generously of his time and talents to numerous organizations in his community, including the New Kent Chamber of Commerce, where he worked and interacted with other business leaders; and
WHEREAS, Carlton Southworth will be remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his children, Carlton, Carla, Steven, and Dale and their families, and many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a successful businessman, community volunteer, and outstanding Virginian, Carlton Miles Southworth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carlton Miles Southworth as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
