Commending the Broad Run High School football team.

WHEREAS, the 2008 Broad Run High School football team (14 - 0) capped an outstanding season by winning the Virginia High School League, Group AA, Division 4 state football championship on December 6, 2008; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at Liberty University’s Williams Stadium, the Broad Run High School Spartans clinched the state football crown by defeating the two-time defending champion Lancers of Amherst County High School by a score of 13 - 0; and

WHEREAS, quarterback Chris Jessop, running backs Breon Earl and T. J. Peeler, and wide receiver Adrian Flemming all played an exceptional championship game and all the hard-working players made valuable contributions in the playoffs and throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, during the regular season, the Spartans from Loudoun County, respected for their dominant defense, also shut out a tough team that averaged nearly 40 points per game against other high schools; and

WHEREAS, the state championship win marks a remarkable three-year turnaround for the Broad Run High School football team, which has now won 24 of its last 25 games, and the Spartans have won four postseason games in a row since Michael Burnett became head coach; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2008 Spartans is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Michael Burnett and his staff; and the support of the students and faculty of Broad Run High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Broad Run High School football team as the Virginia High School League, Group AA, Division 4 state football champions; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Michael Burnett as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the Spartans’ championship performance and outstanding season.
