Commending Horace E. Meyers.

WHEREAS, Horace E. Meyers of Victoria, a small town in Lunenburg County, is commended for his service to his country and 50 years of service to VFW Post 9954; and

WHEREAS, in 2009 VFW Post 9954 celebrates 60 years of service to its fellow veterans and the Town of Victoria; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers, a World War II veteran, has diligently and faithfully served as quartermaster of VFW Post 9954 for the past 50 years, where he has maintained the books and records of the Post with accuracy and honesty; and

WHEREAS, a native of Indiana, Horace Meyers was born on April 25, 1918, to William H. Meyers and Beulah Meyers and is one of three brothers; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers began his education in a one-room school before attending high school in Indiana; after graduation, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, in 1939 Horace Meyers joined the Kentucky National Guard and was called into federal service in 1941; he was on his way to Manila, Philippines, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and his convoy returned to the United States; and

WHEREAS, recognized for his leadership ability and hard work, Horace Meyers attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and then was ordered to Camp Adair, Oregon, to train the new 70th Infantry Division for overseas service; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers was sent overseas to Germany with thousands of other American soldiers where he served in four campaigns and as executive officer of C Battery, 882nd Field Artillery Battalion, 70th Infantry Division; and

WHEREAS, while in Germany, Horace Meyers sustained injuries from an exploding hand grenade and spent one month in an Army hospital; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers was discharged in December 1945 but reenlisted and was sent to Manila as a prison officer with the 738th M.P. Battalion until he was discharged again; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers came to Virginia in 1948 and became a hardware salesman for Belknap Hardware; he settled down to raise a family of four daughters with his wife, Ruby Crews; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers has been actively involved in the community of Victoria, including 16 years as a member of the town council; and

WHEREAS, over 90 years old, Horace Meyers’ commitment and dedication to his country and community continues to serve as a source of inspiration to his family, friends, and fellow veterans; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Horace E. Meyers for his service to his country and 50 years of service to VFW Post 9954; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Horace E. Meyers as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his dedication to VFW Post 9954 and service to his community and country.

WHEREAS, VFW Post 9954 celebrates 60 years of service to its fellow veterans and the Town of Victoria in 2009; and

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Horace E. Meyers for his service to his country and 50 years of service to VFW Post 9954; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Horace E. Meyers as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his dedication to VFW Post 9954 and service to his community and country.
