Commending Nicole Guggenheim Yancey.

WHEREAS, Nicole Guggenheim Yancey, Honorary Consul of France, received the French Legion of Honor award during a ceremony at her home in Newport News; and

WHEREAS, given to only about 3,000 French citizens annually, the prestigious French Legion of Honor award was founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte; and

WHEREAS, a dual citizen of France and the United States, Nicole Yancey survived World War II and came to the United States as a student in international studies; and

WHEREAS, committed to using her international education and experience, Nicole Yancey first began her work in intercultural relations as a volunteer for the bicentennial celebration of the American Revolution in Yorktown, where she later helped in the coordination of the French Memorial; and

WHEREAS, as Honorary Consul of France, Nicole Yancey serves as a volunteer of the French Consulate to all areas of Virginia except Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Nicole Yancey efficiently and professionally provides service to both United States and French citizens, including representing France at special events, helping Americans obtain visas to France, and assisting French citizens in the United States; and

WHEREAS, a generous and understanding woman, Nicole Yancey not only believes strongly in helping individuals, but sees her work as helping different nations understand one another; and

WHEREAS, Nicole Yancey received the French Legion of Honor award at a ceremony at her home attended by friends, family, and representatives from the French Embassy in Washington; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Nicole Guggenheim Yancey for receiving the prestigious French Legion of Honor award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nicole Guggenheim Yancey as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her service to her community and the Commonwealth.
