Commending the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc., on the occasion of its 75th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in March 1934, a small group of young men became concerned about the safety of the citizens of the City of Lynchburg because of two very serious incidents involving difficult fires; one of the fires resulted in 22 deaths and approximately 75 persons were admitted to the hospital; and

WHEREAS, out of the concern and interest of these citizens, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew, later to become known as the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc., was formed; and

WHEREAS, since its founding in 1934, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew has served the citizens of Lynchburg by providing essential medical and rescue operations, often at personal risk and sacrifice to the organization’s volunteer members; and

WHEREAS, in addition to basic medical and rescue operations, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew further assists its community by providing free safety checks of family homes or work offices; Emergency Medical Service (EMS) 911 lights and home numbering tips to help emergency personnel find homes; medical stand-by personnel and equipment for public events; school and club safety demonstrations; blood pressure and blood sugar checks; and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency medical technician (EMT), and other certification programs and classes; and

WHEREAS, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew supports and assists in the success of smoke detector installations in cooperation with the Lynchburg Fire Department; child seat installations by certified installers in cooperation with the Lynchburg Police Department; and an Alzheimer’s search and tracking program, Operation Project Lifesaver, in cooperation with the Lynchburg Police Department and Lynchburg’s Sheriff’s Office; and

WHEREAS, because of its reputation for professionalism and success, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew has been called upon to assist with rescue efforts in disasters hundreds of miles from Lynchburg, benefiting additional communities and building relationships across local and state boundaries; and

WHEREAS, celebrating its 75th anniversary on March 26, 2009, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew is the third oldest city volunteer rescue squad in the United States, following the crews from Roanoke and Salem that are recognized as the first and second, respectively; and

WHEREAS, during its 75 years of existence, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew has touched countless lives—individuals who have been helped and volunteers who have given their time and talents, even risking and sharing the ultimate sacrifice of losing their lives, in service to the community; and

WHEREAS, the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew has brought honor and respect to its members and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc., on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Lynchburg Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the members’ outstanding service and best wishes for a joyful celebration and continued success in the future.
