SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 320
Commending the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church.

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church in Alexandria received the 2008 Bennett Award for Congregational Action on Human Justice and Social Action; and

WHEREAS, given on behalf of the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Bennett Award recognizes a congregation for exemplary work for social justice; and

WHEREAS, viewed as a catalyst for change, the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church was praised by the association for its active and robust social justice program, its leadership as a Green Sanctuary, and its advocacy on climate change; and

WHEREAS, approximately 50 percent of the devoted congregation is involved in social action work spanning advocacy, outreach, services, and education locally, nationally, and globally; and

WHEREAS, on June 28, 2008, the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church was also awarded a certificate acknowledging its successful participation in the Green Sanctuary Program, a program which provides the framework for congregations to make a commitment to sustainable living by the Unitarian Universalist Ministry for the Earth; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church fosters growth in faith, change, and support for communities near and far; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church in recognition of the congregation’s efforts for social action and change; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its achievements and best wishes in the church’s future endeavors.
