SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 379
Designating August 20, 2009, as a day of remembrance of the 40th anniversary of Hurricane Camille.

WHEREAS, in 1969, Tropical Storm Camille formed over the warm waters of the Atlantic; and

WHEREAS, quickly increasing in wind velocity and size, Tropical Storm Camille grew to a powerful Category 5 hurricane headed toward the United States; and

WHEREAS, making landfall in Mississippi, Hurricane Camille’s damaging winds and soaking rains caused widespread damage along its path; and

WHEREAS, as Hurricane Camille moved inland, it was downgraded to a tropical depression, but as it moved into Virginia its rains intensified; and

WHEREAS, while significant portions of Virginia felt the effects of the remnants of Camille, it was Nelson County that suffered the most damaging losses; in a five-hour period during August 19–20, Camille dumped as much as 30 inches of rain on Nelson County; and

WHEREAS, unaware of the amount of rain that would fall and because the rain fell at night, many people perished in the massive flash flooding that occurred; and

WHEREAS, the deluge on Virginia resulted in statewide property damage in the millions of dollars and the loss of over 100 lives; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth was declared a disaster area as the people of Nelson County struggled to rebuild from the devastating rains; and

WHEREAS, while the remnants of Hurricane Camille caused widespread destruction in Nelson County and Virginia, the hard work and determination of Virginia’s citizens and hundreds of volunteers helped in the recovery efforts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate August 20, 2009, as a day of remembrance of the 40th anniversary of Hurricane Camille; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this day on the General Assembly’s website.
