Commending Verdia Haywood.

WHEREAS, Verdia Haywood was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a prestigious 2009 Best of Reston award; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, a native of Mississippi, Verdia Haywood began his government career as a budget analyst for the City of Richmond and then moved to Fairfax County in 1978 to serve as liaison from the County Executive’s office to the Board of Supervisors; and

WHEREAS, when the office was reorganized, Verdia Haywood became the first deputy county executive for Human Services, a position he holds today; and

WHEREAS, Verdia Haywood has worked diligently and faithfully over the years to make human services more accessible to the people who need them; he oversees several county departments and is a liaison to several boards, authorities, and commissions; and

WHEREAS, Verdia Haywood brought together service providers for the homeless and successfully competed for millions of federal dollars to build transitional and permanent supportive housing; and

WHEREAS, a visionary and creative leader, Verdia Haywood created the Consolidated Community Fund Pool, which brought new coherence to Fairfax County’s method of investing in nonprofit organizations; and

WHEREAS, Verdia Haywood has also facilitated the community-driven response to emerging issues with the creation of the Long Term Care Task Force and the Community Interfaith Liaison; and

WHEREAS, Verdia Haywood’s commitment to efficient and innovative government services has increased the quality of service Fairfax County offers to its citizens in need of human services and provides a model for other local governments; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Verdia Haywood on his outstanding service to the citizens of Northern Virginia and on his well-deserved honor as a 2009 Best of Reston award recipient; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Verdia Haywood as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his efforts on behalf of the community of Reston.

WHEREAS, Kohann Williams was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a prestigious 2009 Best of Reston award; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, Kohann Williams worked in the public sector for many years, culminating with her time on the Fairfax County School Board, including three years as chair, where she worked diligently to professionalize all aspects of public sector experiences to make them responsive to the people served; and

WHEREAS, Kohann Williams then served as Director of Communications for Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, where she used her commitment to service to help Northrop Grumman establish crucial local connections to community organizations; and

WHEREAS, Kohann Williams has generously given of her time and talents on the boards of several community organizations, including the Greater Reston Arts Center, Global Camps Africa, Arts Council of Fairfax County, and the Virginia Council for the Arts; and

WHEREAS, Kohann Williams is known for her savvy in planning events and communications strategies and her ability to help an organization move forward with its goals, making her a frequent “go-to” person; and

WHEREAS, Kohann Williams has also served the Fairfax County Park Foundation, Celebrate Fairfax, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, Fairfax-Falls Church United Way, and Inova Health Systems; and

WHEREAS, Kohann Williams has remained focused in all her endeavors on having organizations meet the needs of individuals, and she provides a model for others to emulate; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Kohann Williams on her outstanding service to the citizens of Northern Virginia and on her well-deserved honor as a 2009 Best of Reston award recipient; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kohann Williams as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for her efforts on behalf of the community of Reston.
