WHEREAS, Deputy Thomas Alan Reid of Bluefield, Virginia, a respected citizen and an outstanding law-enforcement officer for the Tazewell County Sheriff?s Office, died in the line of duty on February 1, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Alan ?Tom? Reid was born on March 15, 1958, in Bluefield, West Virginia, the son of the late Garnet Reid and Ruth Rider Reid, graduated from Pocahontas High School, and completed mining engineering classes at Bluefield State College in West Virginia; and

WHEREAS, seeking a career in the criminal justice field, Tom Reid graduated from the Southwest Law Enforcement Academy and was certified by the Department of Criminal Justice Services as a law-enforcement officer; and

WHEREAS, Tom Reid began his career with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office as a jailor on January 16, 1998; he was transitioned to the Patrol Division and promoted to sergeant; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong learner, Tom Reid continued to increase his knowledge and hone his skills, and he received numerous certifications for the completion of advanced law-enforcement qualifications; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Reid became a detective for the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office and served as a highly experienced field training officer; and

WHEREAS, an outstanding 12-year law-enforcement officer, Deputy Reid was assigned as court bailiff for Jack S. Hurley, Jr., the chief judge of the Tazewell County General District Court; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Deputy Reid generously gave his time and expertise to many professional organizations, including as a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Virginia Sheriffs? Association; and

WHEREAS, Tom Reid was a faithful member of Abbs Valley Baptist Church in Bluefield, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Tom Reid was devoted to his family, his church, and his career, and he enjoyed and respected nature and the outdoors and relaxed by hunting, fishing, camping, and being with family; and

WHEREAS, Tom Reid will be greatly missed by his wife of 33 years, Dianna Sneed Reid; his two wonderful sons, Jason Reid and Christopher Reid; his granddaughter, Ivy Reid; his three brothers, Darrel Reid and wife Faye, Rodney Reid and wife Sarah, and James Reid and wife Teresa; his nephews and nieces, Kelly, Joshua, Joseph, Colleen, and Jennifer; numerous friends; and his fellow first responders in Tazewell County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine public servant and outstanding Virginian, Thomas Alan Reid; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Alan Reid as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
