WHEREAS, Amy Phillips, a first-grade teacher at Providence Elementary School in Grayson County, was recognized for her outstanding efforts in the classroom as the 2008 - 2009 Grayson County Teacher of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Amy Phillips received a bachelor?s degree in education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; she has also done graduate work at the University of Virginia in pursuit of a master?s degree in reading; and
WHEREAS, Amy Phillips began her career at Providence Elementary School as a kindergarten teacher; she worked there from 1991 until 2005 and was known and respected for her teaching style; and
WHEREAS, Amy Phillips then moved to Independence and Elk Creek Elementary Schools as a Title I teacher before returning to Providence Elementary as a first-grade teacher in 2006; and
WHEREAS, an outstanding educator, Amy Phillips provides a safe, nurturing, and fun learning environment for her students as they learn the building blocks of reading, math, and other subjects that will enable them to continue to learn and develop throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, patient and loving, Amy Phillips works diligently to instill in each child a love and excitement for learning as well as the knowledge that each is valued and respected as a person; and
WHEREAS, a committed educator who is actively involved in her profession, Amy Phillips is a member of the Grayson County Education Association and the National Education Association; she was also a member of the international honorary organization of women educators, Alpha Delta Kappa; and
WHEREAS, Amy Phillips has been recognized for leadership in the classroom and commitment to her students through her selection as the Roanoke Times Teacher of the Week in December 2000 and the Galax Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 2002; and
WHEREAS, a talented and dedicated educator, Amy Phillips epitomizes the vital role of innovative teachers in the education of Virginia?s children; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Amy Phillips on her selection as the 2008 - 2009 Grayson County Teacher of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Amy Phillips as an expression of the General Assembly?s admiration and gratitude for her commitment to the children of Grayson County.
