WHEREAS, E. George Middleton, Jr., a respected businessman and community leader, died on December 7, 2009; and

WHEREAS, George Middleton received a bachelor?s degree in engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and joined his father?s firm, E.G. Middleton, Inc., Electrical Contractors, where he remained active as president and chairman until his death; and

WHEREAS, devoted to his profession, George Middleton was a registered professional engineer and respected member of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers and National Society of Professional Engineers; he also served as president of the Builders and Contractors Exchange of Tidewater and president of the Virginia Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association; and

WHEREAS, George Middleton was actively involved in health care issues and organizations for many decades, including as chairman of Sentara Healthcare for 20 years, board member of Sentara Health Foundation, member and former chairman of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, and president of Medical Center Hospitals; and

WHEREAS, George Middleton was well respected for his knowledge and experience regarding health care issues and was a frequent lecturer and speaker at various functions across the United States; and

WHEREAS, George Middleton generously gave of his time and talents in the community as a member of the Norfolk Rotary Club and Bayside Presbyterian Church, trustee of Virginia Wesleyan College and Westminster Canterbury, chairman of the Norfolk City School Board, and director of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, a passionate Hokie, George Middleton enthusiastically supported his alma mater as a member of the Committee of 100 at the College of Engineering, the Golden Hokie Club, Legacy Society, and the Ut Prosim Society; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, George Middleton was recognized for his singular service in the community through the receipt of many awards and accolades, including the 2008 induction into the Academy of Engineering Excellence at Virginia Tech, 2002 First Citizen of Norfolk Award, 1997 Colgate W. Darden, Jr., Scouter Citizen of the Year award, and 1996 Meritorious Service Award from the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association; and

WHEREAS, George Middleton leaves behind an enviable legacy of service to his community and will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected businessman and community leader, E. George Middleton, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of E. George Middleton, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
